A strong blood supply depends on a strong and diverse community of donors.
That’s one reason The LGBTQ+ Center is proud to host an Inclusive Blood Drive with the American Red Cross on Friday, May 29.
According to the American Red Cross, blood donations are essential for hospitals and patients every day, but donor diversity also plays a critical role in helping ensure better matches for patients from different racial and ethnic backgrounds. According to the American Red Cross, there are more than 300 known blood antigens, and some are more common within certain communities and populations.
For patients with sickle cell disease, for example, Black blood donors are significantly more likely to provide compatible matches for commonly needed blood transfusions.
The Red Cross also notes that Type O blood, the most requested blood type by hospitals, is especially common among Latino and African American communities.
Inclusive blood drives help strengthen the blood supply while also creating welcoming opportunities for more people to participate in lifesaving care.
Beyond helping patients, donating blood can also provide donors with useful health information such as blood pressure and hemoglobin levels.

At The LGBTQ+ Center, we believe healthcare and community care go hand in hand. Hosting an inclusive blood drive is one more way we can show up for one another and help meet critical patient needs across Southern Nevada and beyond.
