The Center’s Back-to-School Bounty Fair Supplied 1000 Students with Backpacks and Essentials
Lines of people wrapped around the block on Saturday, July 16, 2022 at The LGBTQ Center of Southern Nevada’s annual Back to School Bounty Fair.
It was a pirate theme where the kids received a treasure map that started at the Port of Joy (named after The Center’s rescue dog) and led to various spots to pick up a backpack and all the supplies needed for school. The staff, volunteers, and vendors created a fun experience for kids getting ready to return to school.
“We expected high demand for backpacks and school supplies due to inflation and rising costs affecting vulnerable families,” says Donna Felix Barrows, Grants and Compliance Coordinator at The Center. “Last year, we handed out 300 backpacks within our first hour, so we’ve reached out to the community to make a more significant impact this year.”
The Center supports a diverse and inclusive community, including the vulnerable population living in the neighborhood. They distributed goods to 1000 students thanks to the support of Healthplan of Nevada – Medicaid, Molina Healthcare, SilverSummit Healthplan, and UNLV.
