State of The Center
From the Board of Directors
As some of you may have seen, an article was posted today by Las Vegas Weekly that has a lot of people talking and is available by clicking below.
We have been asked several times since this has posted if this story is true…..it is. We wanted to take time to clear the air and give you some facts about where we are and how you can help! While we posted our response on Facebook, we realize some of you are not on Facebook and felt it important to send out this way. There seems to be a lot of variations of our story based on who you talk to, so here is our story!
Yes, we were not awarded a sizable grant at the end of 2016 that put us in a large deficit coming into this year. Yes, there were some fundraisers that didn’t take place that we were relying on….and yes, due to all of this we have had to make very difficult decisions about Staff and Center hours of operation.
Since we have made those decisions, we have taken action to protect The Center. We have hired a Development Firm to assist us in our Development Program that needed revitalization. We have appointed a new Executive Director in Andre Wade who is leading The Center with a passion and conviction that is unrivaled. His drive and love for the LGBTQ community in Southern Nevada will continue to help The Center rise to new levels.
The future does NOT look grim but we do need the support of the community, our allies and corporations that have always been there for us.
Your support has already started! Since the publication of the above article, you have donated another $2,000 to our #Proud2B campaign (up another $1,400 since we posted this on Facebook)! We still have a long way to go to hit our $50,000 goal, but we do have some ideas on how you can help! Here is how you can help The Center and our Community:
All of our programming at The Center is free to all, including HIV testing. To keep our programs intact, we need funding. Our main programs are:
- Qvolution – Youth
- ACT III – Seniors
- Identi-T* – Transgender
- HIV Services
You can also support The Center by attending these events by our community partners:
- Come out to Real Results Fitness on 7/4 for a $10 work out with all of the proceeds coming to The Center!
- Eat at any of the 4 Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza from July 17-July 21 and show them a flier that we will create soon. 20% of all of the sales for the entire week will come to The Center!
- Come out to Family BINGO on 7/29 at Alexis Park hosted by LAS VEGAS PRIDE. All proceeds will come to The Center
- Come out to Equality Day on 7/30 hosted by the Las Vegas 51s Baseball Team, tickets are for sale at The Center for $10 and that money stays with The Center!
We continue to push towards the future because we know the power of this community and the needs of those we serve. We ask for your support, your trust and your help in getting the amazing work we do out to the rest of the community. More important, we ask you to be intolerant of intolerance, to rise up and stand with us. To make your voices heard in this time we are living in. We need each other now more than ever!
We would be remiss to not thank the amazing staff of The Center who through all of the changes, cuts and hurdles have pushed through. Worked countless hours and never asked for a thank you, because they love the community. We would like to thank the Associate Board & Governing Board of The Center for finding new and inventive ways to manage in the grey. Our time in the grey is not for long. Never the less, we persist.
DID YOU KNOW: Last year, we provide over 68,785 units of service to our community. We have hosted 2,407 community meetings, logged 12,086 volunteer hours and provided 391,825 HIV prevention kits.
Last night, KTNV Channel 13 Action News was onsite at The Center to interview Andre Wade and patrons of The Center. Be sure to look for the story on Channel 13!
Share this, invite folks to The Center that haven’t been and help us ensure that The Center is always a welcoming and inclusive place for everyone by pitching in today.
